Aldi Wines Take Out Top Gongs at Sydney Wine Festival

In a blow to the credibility of wine snobs everywhere, several ‘cheap and cheerful’ wines from discount supermarket chain Aldi took out top honours in a blind taste test at the prestigious Sydney International Wine Competition.

Aldi’s $29.99 Monsigny Premier Cru Brut took out the best sparkling wine award, while their $12.99 Tudor Central Victorian Shiraz received the top gong in the best red table wine and best lighter-bodied dry red table wine categories.

For more budget conscious connoisseurs, their $4.99 Spanish Tempranillo took out a Blue Gold award, and three other sub ten-dollar drops received a coveted top 100 status: a Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, and a Shiraz.

In total, six Aldi bottles were judged to be in the top 280 wines of the competition, in a field of over 2000 wines.

The wines were blind tasted by a panel of 14 international and Australian experts in two rounds, first on their ‘technical correctness’ to separate the wheat from the chaff, and then alongside food.

The Convenor of the Sydney International Wine Competition, Warren Mason, said that judging the wines on how they paired with food makes a big difference compared to traditional wine shows, which only focus on the wine.

“The bold, are not always the most beautiful”, Mason said, meaning that full flavoured, ‘punch in the face’ style wines aren’t always best when you’re sitting down for a delicious Sunday afternoon roast.

All this goes to show that you don’t need to break the bank when you’re planning your next dinner party.

Duck on over to Aldi and pick yourself up a few bottles of cheap, award winning plonk, then wait for the accolades to roll in.
