Toilet paper. Dunny tickets. Butt napkins. Whatever you call it, we all use toilet paper everyday.
It’s funny then that such a simple necessity is almost considered conversational taboo. I mean really, how many conversations about toilet paper have you ever really had? In all honesty, I’ve never really given much thought to my toilet paper consumption.
Shopping for it generally consists of finding the brand that offers the most rolls for the lowest price without too much compromise on comfort or ply. But after I do pick it out from the lineup offered, I try to hide it amongst the rest of my groceries and pretend it’s not there, like it’s something to be embarrassed about.
Then one day I came across Who Gives A Crap. WGAC are an Australian startup that specializes in toilet paper. OK, what’s so special about that?
Well, all of their toilet paper is made from 100% recycled post-consumer waste paper… oh and did I mention that 50% of their profits are donated to WaterAid, an organisation that helps to build toilets and improve sanitation in developing countries? Well, yeah, they do that too! In fact, let me give you a couple of stats from the back of their baseball card.
- Over 69,000 people now have access to sanitation thanks to their donations to WaterAid.
- Over 12,000 trees have been spared thanks to their recycled products.
- 29 million litres of water has been saved due to their use of eco-friendly production materials.
- Over 2,300 tons of greenhouse gas emissions have been prevented from cleaner production processes.
Still think toilet paper is banal? On top of the above, I’d encourage you to visit their site and read through the About Us and Our Impact sections.
I lost power after a big storm hit earlier in the week and threw a tantrum like a petulant child. But after reading about the consequences that arise from the absence of something as everyday as a toilet, I realised that I’m really just a spoilt brat.
So let’s look at this objectively. All of us use toilet paper, presumably everyday. It’s a necessity we really do take for granted.
One of the best value products the website offers is the 48 double length rolls for $48. I don’t know about you, but $1 a roll? Now that’s good wipin’!
Of course, there’s smaller quantities available for anyone wishing to sample their products first, but on the other end of the spectrum, they also offer bulk options for the office or that doomsday bomb shelter you’ve been stocking up.
So regardless of whether you just want some toilet paper, or you like the idea of lending a helping hand to the environment and people in need in exchange for a product you’re going to buy anyway, Who Gives A Crap has got your wipe covered.
